If you visit Lake Balaton this summer, it is worth trying out these Hungarian beach foods! We have collected the most popular ones and included their recipes – so that you can enjoy them at home too!

A true beach lángos

Lángos is definitely the most well-known and beloved Hungarian beach food. Several different recipes exist, but here is the recipe of Nosalty, called “a true beach lángos”:

Ingredients

  • 30 dkg bread flour
  • 1 dl of milk
  • 1.5 dl of water
  • 2.5 dkg fresh yeast (half of a whole)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 teaspoon of powdered sugar
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 2 dl sour cream
  • 20 dkg of cheese
  • 20 dl sunflower oil

Preparation

Microwave the milk in a glass for 5-10 seconds, then add the sugar and yeast. Next, cover the glass for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, sift the flour into a deep bowl, add salt, make a well in the center and pour in the yeast milk. Add enough lukewarm water to make a fairly soft dough, but make sure it is not too much. Now, all there is left to do is wait. Let the dough double in size within approximately an hour. After that, in a deep bowl, heat 10 centimeters of oil until very hot. Take approx. 5-6 cm pieces from the dough, spread them well with oiled hands, and fry them in hot oil for about 2-4 minutes.

As for the topping, Hungarians usually put sour cream and grated cheese on the finished lángos.

Pour a little oil into the hot pan before frying the first pancake and start baking the pancakes one by one, on both sides.

For a final touch, choose a filling for your palacsinta. From sugar to chocolate and vanilla sauce, everything goes. Moreover, a special version of palacsinta is filled with meat, cheese and garlic.
